uThe beginning of War period(From the Battles in the Onin era)
Daigoji temple suffered from several fires. The fire especially in Onin and Bunmei eras destroyed the Shimo-Daigo area except the Five-storied Pagoda. The social confusion at that time raised the curtain of the 'Period of War between the Provinces'. It is very much fortunate that nowadays we can see the pagoda built in 951.
In Kamidaigo area the Juntei Hall is well known as the eleventh place of the pilgrimage in the Western part of Japan and the Godai Hall is as the center of the "Godairiki-san" faith.
uRestoration and Development of Daigoji Temple
An intimate contact with persons in political power enabled Daigoji to restore and develop the temple complex. For instance, it is worthwhile to refer to Manzei Jugo in the beginning of the 15th century and Gien Jugo in the end of the 16th century.
The detail diaries written by the both show their diplomatic activities. It should be noted, however, that corroborative descriptions and colophons in the diaries prove that their activities intended to preserve cultural heritages in Daigoji temple.

uThe Relationship with TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi
Gien Jugo is well known for his close relationship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He organized the gorgeous "Hanami" (cherry blossom viewing) party for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which glorifies the latest life of the great hero of the age.
uKasuga no tsubone
Kasuganotsubone was a nurse of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shogun in Edo shogunate. She was a daughter of Saito Toshimitsu who served for Akechi Mitsuhide. She was appointed to a nurse of the Shogun at 1604. After Iemitsu became Shogun, she obtained the power in the shogunate.
Daigoji preserves ten letters from her, which were written at the back of something.
uDaigoji temple in Edo period
In Edo period, the shognate permitted Shugendo (the mountain asceticism, also called Yamabushi) practiced in Sanboin from Rigen daishi (Shobo), who is also well known for its re-founder, with an official name Tozanha. Since the entrance of the head priest Koken of Daigoji into the Omine mountain in Nara the Daigo tradition has penetrated into Shugendo more and more. To commemorate this tradition, the event called Hanaku nyubu shugyo (Practice to enter the Omine mountain to offer flowers) is held by the head priest of Sanboin.
